Melissa, hailing from the picturesque Porthtowan, was part of Team England's medal-winning trio at the ISA World Para Surfing Championships held at Oceanside Pier, California, on November 7th. Alongside her were Zoe Smith from Bournemouth, who also won silver in the para surfing stand 2 category, and Hannah Dines, based between Manchester and Glasgow, who took home copper in the para surfing prone 2 event.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, eye-opening. During the visually impaired 2 division final, Melissa Reid faced a massive 10-foot wave. And this is the part most people miss: she credits her blindness for her success in this instance. She humorously remarked, "I'm pretty grateful I was blind and couldn't see how big it was. I'm not sure I'd have gone for it if I'd seen it!"
Melissa, a three-time world champion, had her team manager, Phil Williams, as her eyes in the water for the first time. She explained, "I know what I like, so I told him what kind of wave and directions I wanted, and he'd give me verbal cues."
She was "super-pleased" to have come second to Aleli Medina from Puerto Rico, whom she described as "one of the best surfers in the world." Melissa added, "I've been surfing better than I've ever surfed, and all I wanted to do was showcase what I could do as a blind female surfer from Cornwall."
Team England ranked seventh overall in the world championships, which saw 24 countries represented by approximately 135 athletes.
